Do you ever feel disappointed on Mother’s Day or your birthday? Girl, I hear you. That’s why I decided that I needed to take things into my own very capable hands a few years ago. When it comes to doing things for myself, I’m a DIY kind of girl; I don’t wait for anyone else. Here are 5 ways to treat yourself so that you have the best Mother’s Day ever.
Buy Yourself a Gift
That’s right, I said it. I want you to go out to your favorite store or go online and buy something for you! It doesn’t have to be expensive—it’s not about the money. This is about doing something kind and thoughtful for yourself.
You can buy something that’s beautiful but inexpensive like a pretty journal or lovely scented candle. Or, if you really feel like treating yourself, buy something that really tickles your fancy, something that you’ve been wanting for a long time. The trick is: buy something that you don’t need, something that screams gift, not necessary purchase.
Enjoy an Empty House
Are you looking for a completely free way to feel absolutely incredible and energized? Ask your husband or partner to take the kids out of the house for a minimum of 2 or 3 hours. Imagine what you could do with that time? You could enjoy a quiet house and do whatever you want! You can nap, shower, eat candy without hiding the fact that you’re eating candy, and take another shower!
This option always conjures images of Tom Cruise (back when he was totally crushable, remember that?) in the movie Risky Business dancing in his underwear when his parents left him alone in the house. You can do that too! The point is, do whatever it is that YOU WANT. It’s an amazing feeling. Just ask 1980s Tom Cruise here.
Treat Your Own Mom
Take the time this Mother’s Day (or day before Mother’s Day, as I like to do) and show some appreciation for your own mom. Take her out to her favorite restaurant for lunch or to a movie. Showing your appreciation for all that she is and all that she’s done is a great way for you to celebrate.
I like to take my mom to an adorable Victorian tea room that serves lunch, homemade desserts, and tea in your very own personal, antique tea pot. It’s a lovely place and a special experience—especially since we’ve been going there ever since I was a teenager. Don’t have a special place you share with your own mom? Start a tradition this year.

Take Yourself Out
Have you ever gone out for lunch or dinner alone? To tell you the truth, I never would have tried this before having kids, but after kids, the prospect of a quiet meal eclipses any awkwardness I might feel about being alone. Have your husband or partner babysit while you enjoy a nice meal of your own choosing.
If you feel awkward about being out alone, try going to a more casual place like a Panera or Atlanta Bread Company. People fly solo at these places all the time. Or, call up a friend and meet her out for lunch. A great meal and a great conversation equal a fabulous treat for you.
Spend some time indulging in a fabulously scented bubble bath, or treating yourself to an at-home facial. Buy a vibrant new nail polish color and give yourself a pedicure.
Are you an overachiever? Go out to a spa and have your favorite treatment done. Enjoy a blissful afternoon with background sounds of quiet instrumental music, not Paw Patrol.
A Final Word On Guilt:
Don’t let guilt hold you back from treating yourself and enjoying your day. If you can’t treat yourself on Mother’s Day, then when can you? Give yourself permission to do this, even if it’s just for this one day, this day that exists to celebrate YOU!
Think about this: treat yourself is just shorthand for treat yourself well. We all need to learn how to treat ourselves well—if we can’t do that, we’re preventing ourselves from living up to our fullest potential and living our best, happiest, most fulfilled lives. A happy life begins with you, so take advantage of this holiday and celebrate yourself. You deserve it, mama!
